My Favorite Sound on Earth...

I sometimes think our sense of sound is the most “underrated” of the senses. We often talk of how wonderful fresh apple pie smells, or how beautiful an ocean sunset looks, or how delicious a homemade lasagna tastes (all true by the way), but it seems that we rarely talk of how amazing some things sound.
Today I would like to talk about my favorite sound on earth...the sound of rain on leaves. If I were to think back to the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my lifetime…it was the first time that I truly “heard” this sound. I used to frequently hike to a large wooded area behind the house that I grew up in…usually hoping to come across some rare bird that I had never seen before so I could mark it down in my bird journal ...I was 12 don’t judge :)
One afternoon in particular, I was relatively far into the woods when a steady rain started and slowly grew into a torrential downpour. As long as I live, I’ll never forget what that sounded like. The sound of the pouring rain hitting the treetops was like a symphony…rain against leaf multiplied my millions. It was truly beyond description. The treetops provided ample shelter which allowed me to just stand there and appreciate what I was hearing.
That’s how the sound of rain on leaves became my favorite sound on earth.
What’s your favorite sound?

  1. My favorite sound has got to be the sound of my Harley haha.

  2. I adore the sound of rain on leaves, but one of the sounds that truly makes me happy is the sound of crows in the morning during a camping trip in the mountains. It is so refreshing to hear their high-up caws while the misty wind outside whooshes by, alerting me to the fact that is morning outside the thick canvas of the camper. Them and just the sound of mountains in general. ^o^

  3. You are so perceptive. I really need to live in the moment more like you. My favorite sound is pure silence. When my kids are quiet and not sounding like they are coming through the ceiling upstairs, I'm most content.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I love hearing church bells in the distance. And fires crackling in the fireplace.

    ReplyDelete
  5. As a musician, music would be my favorite sound. I can appreciate the complexities. As far as natural sounds, probably the ocean. It's very peaceful.

    ReplyDelete
  6. So many of them but today...the sound of winter melting and running down the gutters and down spouts, dripping on the driveway... heaven.

    ReplyDelete
  7. really awesome memory. thank you for sharing it.

  8. The sound of rain on leaves is one of my favourite too. I love the sound of pouring rain and the sounds animals make, like a cats meow.

  9. nice...the sound of rain is def soothing...and i rather like it on a tin pot as well adding that tink or plink...i love sounds...i try to weave them in my writing and even pay attention to how it sounds as i think it gives a full picture....we are never without sound....everything has its music...right now the small tock of the pull chain on the ceiling fan is lulling me a bit...smiles.

  10. I like the sound of crickets...it makes me think of the warm summer nights when I was a kid. Looking into a nighttime blackness full of crickets, I love.

  11. Oh I like that sound too. I also like to hear the rain on my umbrella when I walk on rainy mornings. I also love to hear water running over rocks in the streams I walk along.
Another is the laughter of a baby when they are really laughing hard. I can't help but laugh along with them.
There are so many wonderful sounds it really is hard to pick a favorite!!!

  12. For me it's the sound of a fan drowning out distractions/other sounds. The white noise relaxes me...I always have one on when I sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Funny you mention hearing - our power went off the other night because of the rain and winds - it was so quiet - we really got to hear the rain! So nice. sandie

  21. I love to hear the sound of rain on the leaves. It soothes me. After reading your post, I can also smell the moist earth (I love this scent), and I can feel the cool air on my skin.

  22. Mmm, a favourite means (one) choice and I have so many, so many wonderful sounds. I was surprised to see your post was about sound as something another blog friend said recently about hearing really struck a chord and I'll be doing a post about it.
I have to choose my (favourite) sound. It would have to be the sound of my children's voices.

  23. Wind rushing through the pines... a baby's laugh... the clomping of horse hooves and ringing of the trolley bell as you enter Main Street USA at Disney World... my little Pomeranian's adorable howls of greeting when I get home... and let's not forget a deep Scottish brogue! (Honestly, the most beautiful accent I've ever heard. It really is musical to me).... music from the old "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" movie classic.

I really miss hearing my canary's singing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hmm that is a tough one, I mean I like music and such, but actual nature sounds, not sure. A little rain is fine and the ocean, guess I'm just so used to it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love the sound of the rain! There is no night like that one you go to sleep with a little pattering of rain outside. There is no reading like that book that is read with the soundtrack of rain.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Beautiful, Keith! I love the sounds of rain too...or waves crashing, or a babbling brook. Anything water.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You describe your memory so beautifully, Keith. I love the sound of rain on leaves, too, as well as the sound of the wind in leaves. I also love the sound of the mourning dove in the early morning and the sound of a cat purring.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lovely memories, Keith! I do love the sound of rain, but my favorite sound is the wind in the trees. I love when I can hear it coming from a distance and it sounds just like waves crashing on a beach. So peaceful.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Crackling fire, rain on a tin roof, breaking glass, waves crashing against the shore, "babbling" brooks... Very lovely memory too, my friend. I wish I could remember things like that.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is my favorite sound too ~ Like Brian, I am trying to capture sounds in my words, its a challenge ~

    Have a lovely day & weekend ~

  31. I've spent my share of time in rainforests with the rain coming down...it's actually quite deafening. I love the sound of the ocean...mountain creeks...hard to pick a favorite...maybe it's like music: I like it all!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sounds like a wonderful experience, a time when you could hear it without the noise of rain drops on an umbrella being louder.
I love the sound of Bellbirds in the cool of our rainforests but most of all I love the voice of my sweet little 5 year old girl each morning as she snuggles in and says "I love you Mummy".

    ReplyDelete
  33. I loved your description of the rain on the leaves-that should be a poem
I love the sound of water too-I love a soft rain, gentle waves coming to shore-I haven't been to an ocean since the 70s and that really impressed me

    ReplyDelete
  34. O, I agree -- sounds are just as evocative as smells -- I LOVE the sound of rain, of birds, the sea, my kids squealing with laughter, the whistle of the wind before a storm... p.s. you have an awesome blog, and I'm following you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That is a sound I really like, too! But my absolute favourite is ocean sounds, particularly the sound of waves crashing against the shore. It is music to my ears!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rustling poplar tree leaves, especially as they get dry towards the end of summer.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My favorite sound of a song bird.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Rain IS lovely, as is wind, and air but really my favorite has to be laughter - spontaneous laughter for no other reason except that it is good to be alive - at the time, in that moment.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh yes those soft shoes tap dancing on the leaves yes I know it well, my favourite also. :) B

    ReplyDelete
  40. My guitar and my piano :)
The best sounds on Earth to me!

    ReplyDelete
  41. How cute that you had a bird journal! : ) My favorite sound is also rain, but not limited to rain on leaves. Just rain on anything. I love it. There's nothing like trying to go to bed while a thunderstorm is going on outside!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I once walked in the rain from one town to the next, without an umbrella. True story. My car broke down and the only available mechanic was miles away. Most liberating thing I've ever done. It's raining right now. Raindrops tapping on my window, kind of soothing. Oh, and please don't stand under a tree in torrential rain. Wouldn't want you to get hit by lightning. Stay dry. Goodnight, Keith :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Guitar. And also the sound of moving water (ie a river, or swimmers doing laps in a swimming pool)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I also like listening to the rain against the house coming down on to the ground. I actually like a lot of sounds. The ducks and geese that fly back and forth out back along the wetlands.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Laugh of small kids is favorite of mine.
    Lovely words ,dreamer;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. The sound of puddles being jumped in or when it's quiet and you are in a pool or some body of water and you just slowly move through the water. :) Love it

    ReplyDelete
  47. As a musician, I've always had a special perception of sound - - not only musical sounds, but also the incredible sounds of nature that surround us and often go unnoticed. Many composers were inspired by the sounds of nature - most particularly Beethoven, who remained intrigued by them long after he was deaf.

I love the sound of the wind, birds, and rain.....and the echoe of silence.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, I miss the sound of rain on the roof: as an Australian, this was always a really 'good news' sound and always helped me go straight to sleep. Living here in Geneva on the 8th floor of an eleven storey apartment means that rain occurs without me hearing it.

Favourite sounds also include hearing my dog snuffle in her sleep; my daughter's laugh, birds singing (corny but true) and the sound of our coffee machine working her magic....

    ReplyDelete
  49. If you like that sound, check out Dan Gibson... he writes meditation music of all styles and types, and incorporates all the nature sounds in there too. Sound is definitely one of the most awesome senses. I love putting on my headphones and just losing myself in music... helps when you have noise-canceling ones too :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. The sound of waves to the shore, and leaves fluttering in the wind :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. also the sound of a distant train , and the sound or an airplane in the summer

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm similar except that I like the sound of rain anywhere. I love rain.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Rain against the window - birdsong and the shushing of the sea on a pebbled beack

    ReplyDelete
  54. I like being able to throw open the window in early March and hear the sound of birdsong, because then I realise I've missed it over winter. But more than anything, I love the sound of silence. It so rarely happens.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mourning doves...I was a wee one when I first noticed the soft sounds they made whilst out walking with my Gran. She smiled at me and said that Her Gran had told her it was the sound of souls soft laughter as they traveled the earth before moving on.

Those words have stayed with me all this time.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I was sitting with my window open recently, and for once the radio was off. For the first time in a long time I could hear birdsong. I suddenly felt so much lighter and more peaceful. My body let go of a lot of tension I hadn't noticed until it was gone.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I do like what you described and there are some sounds from my childhood that I really like. Like the sounds of the water from the ocean crashing onto the beach as the sun is setting and the sand is cool under my feet.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I too love the sound of rain, and the scent of soil after the first rain after a long dry period.

I love the sound of birdsong too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favourite sound would definately be the sea :)

Have a nice weekend, my friend** :P

  60. Waves crashing on rocks, a stream trickling, rain hitting anything... yes, water is a great sound!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love listening to a thunder and lightening storm when I am in the house... it helps me sleep at night:)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I do so agree. Having 25 years ago (thereabouts)last some hearing and gained tinnitus I now appreciate what I had and still have more than I did before.
    Favourite sound: the cello.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The sound of rain on leaves is an amazing sound. It to me sounds so cleansing. I like the sound of the ocean also, in fact... I buy CDs with water sounds to relax with.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thank you for reminding me of the beauty and value of sound! It is so easy to only register and remember the visual. I'm going to try and note down moments of sound and touch each day for a week - use my other senses to become more aware of the world around me.

I love the sound of rushing wind in the treetops - but am going to stand under them next time it rains and listen.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yeah the sound of rain on the leaves is one of my favorites too.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thanks for sharing this wonderful reminder of how wonderful the sound of nature is, I love the sound of rain too, just simply beautiful:)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I really like what you have written. I was drawn in to the memory of the wonderful sound right along with you. I love how here in the orchard you can hear the rain before you can feel it. Beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I love the sound of rain also but don't think I have heard it in the leaves. Something to look forward to. What I do love and have experienced is the sound of wind in the pine trees. It totally transports me to a peaceful place.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Funny enough that's the sound I'm hearing now. It's raining in London and my office opens up to a derelict garden with a few bushes and small trees. I loved your post. My favourite sound is children and parents' laughter. I work at a school so I'm used to it but I can never get enough.

    Greetings from London.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The sound of the sea lapping at the shore, waves of it covering shells, the sound of it retreating. So calming, soothing and yet so alive.

    ReplyDelete
  71. What a beautiful 'word picture' you have painted for us!!!

Favorite sound? What pops into my mind is... When I got my first hearing aids, and they were put in and turned on, I HEARD the rustle of leaves, on trees, outside the office window. !!!!!!!!

'Course then, the hearing aids became problematic and I stopped using them, and have never completed the project of getting another.......... No reason for my not doing so. Just "put-it-off-ness".

Perhaps, you will do an amazing thing, with this post. Perhaps you will prompt me, to carry through with the plan to get a new hearing aid. :-)

If your post can do that, I'll certainly owe you a batch of my special Brownies!!!!!!! :-))))))))

  72. My favorite sound are the waves crashing onto the shore at the beach. I also have an app on my iPhone of water for meditation, it's so soothing!

    ReplyDelete
  73. We live in a noisy world. Traffic in the street and the sky. Ear buds carrying music from MP3 players. Voices everywhere. Perhaps the noise contributes to our diminished appreciation for silence and for more subtle sounds. I wonder if a previous generation would speak differently about our senses.

My favorite sound has to be that of the summertime insects after sunset. Crickets, catydids, and what we call "scrunch bugs." Back in the days of tape recorders, I even made a cassette tape of nothing but the insects of August . . .so I could play it back in January.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I too haven’t thought about this before... but I couldn't come to a particular sound that I liked more.

I like the sound of crushing leaves through wind and one sound I could never forget was the noise created by Great Horn-bill during its flight, near a rain-forest in our country.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I love so many sounds, so it's difficult to choose a favourite.
But after having stated that, the sound of seagulls has always called to my Soul...ever since I was really tiny.
    Can't really say why though.
Maybe I was a seagull in a past life!!:)

    ReplyDelete
  76. I like hearing my kids laugh. There's just something so pure and innocent about it. It warms my heart. :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Lovely Post!!!!
My Mother, when she calls my name, sweetest sound on Earth

    ReplyDelete
  78. The sound of my kids calling me mom and now my grandson calling me grandma (even though when he says it it sounds more like "ganma". :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. i have never experienced that, i don't think---hmmmm, speaking of rain, i love the sound of it on a tin roof----:)

    ReplyDelete
  80. For me it's the chirping of tree toads, which here in Minnesota is a harbinger of autumn. On average, it's about Aug. 15 when the twilight hours are filled with this sound. On years where the chirping begins early, winter is invariably early and harsh. If the toads don't begin until Sept., winters are always mild.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I love the sound of the wind through big, old evergreens. Sometimes, in the right place, it sounds like a train coming. Which brings me to my other favorite sounds, train whistles. As a small child I used to live with my grandma and there was a train that came through a little gulch and whistled and echoed. Always made me want to travel.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I don't think I've ever heard (or maybe I have but haven't noticed) rain on leaves. Now I'm curious. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love the sound of rain on the roof. I love the sound of perfect harmonies. I love the sound of a sigh. Great post.
    Karen

    ReplyDelete
  84. I love the sound of water. I love the sound of beautiful, joyful, connective laughter too. Thank you for your vivid post, I can hear the rain you describe, a gift.

    ReplyDelete
  85. for some reason I am unable to comment on my ipad..so I've been pondering this for a while...my favorite sound is

    life on the periphery...

    laughter on a nearby playground
    glasses tinkling at the bar
intimate conversations at the next table
    dogs barking in the night
    church bells at noon

I used to take my kids outside in the evening and lay on our trampoline to "listen to the sounds of summer"...it was quite fantastic

life is full of elevator music...all around us...we must listen! great and thoughtful post as usual!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Hm, I hate to be predictable, but it might have to be music...of all kinds. It just makes me cry so easily, and I'm not sure any other sound moves me quite as much.

But of course, there is also a cat's purr...and that's a very close second.

    ReplyDelete
  87. You might like the book,Come To Your Senses - by Stanley Block. I use it in my practice. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  88. I share your love of the sound of rain. I really enjoy being indoors, reading a good book, glass of wine near by and listening to the raindrops!

    ReplyDelete
  89. I like the sound of rain, too, but my favorite sound has to be the sound of a baby's belly laugh. My hubby, however, hates the sound of rain. Ever since he was in Vietnam, he has a whole different perspective on that sound.

    ReplyDelete
  90. i don't know if you saw my reply on my blog to your sweet comment about wanting to share my blog---i would love it if you did--thanks!

  94. The sound of rain - other than when I'm golfing - is a great. If I am golfing, then the sound of a birdie putt hitting the bottom of the cup is pretty sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  95. how do you manage to make me think so hard with every post?

    fave sound? hmmm
rain is a good one and your story is sweet.
i'm going to have to say good music, i love to sing and come from a musical family. music lifts my spirits every time. when i get laryngitis, i am sad!

  96. Thanks...never thought of it so far...will listen to it....

    ReplyDelete
  97. i love the sound of rain as well, but can't think of a favourite sound:-) also, the bird journal sounds like fun! x

    ReplyDelete
  98. tough question, I like your favourite sound.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Oh yes, heavy rain on a summers night is right up there on my list. The rumble of thunder, and then rain is a beautiful sound.
But how about no sound at all! I've only ever once been somewhere and not heard anything. Once on holiday in Cornwall, we were walking a coastal path that went slightly inland. We sat down in a depression in the ground for a break and there was no sound at all. No ocean, no people, cars or planes. So quiet, that it’s the only time I've ever heard the roar of blood in my ears.
Thought provoking post from you again.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I know just the sound you're talking about. Sort of a soft patter and drip all at the same time. So soothing to fall asleep to, as I did last night. I have to say that my favorite sound, however, is the sound of the ocean. For me, there's nothing better than staying at the beach, windows open, listening to the waves roll in and out, and smelling the salt air. As we speak we're having a hailstorm in Southern California (I KNOW!) and I'm kind of enjoying the sound of that, too.

    ReplyDelete
  101. There really is something very poetic about the sound of rain falling. The sound of waves crashing on the rocks is another sound that's very comforting to me.

    ReplyDelete
  102. The sound of rain is so lovely! Some of my favorites are my roosters crowing, my cats meowing, my dog barking at night (because I know she's protecting our animals from predators), and of course my husband telling me he loves me each night before we fall asleep :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. What a beautiful memory. I like the sound of rain, children playing and babies laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Birdsong on an early May morning. Water gently swishing over pebbles in the stream and crashing foamy waves of a wild sea. The crunch of Autumn leaves under my feet and of course the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  105. The whisper I love you from my husband♥

    ReplyDelete
  106. What a lovely share. I love the sound of doves cooing. It sounds so peaceful. BTW, thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. I hope you do get a chance to go to Portugal or Spain one day.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I like the sound of rain on the leaves, birds chirping by my window on a spring morning and the raindrops on my air conditioner outside my window. Beautiful post, Kieth.

    Madison:-)

    ReplyDelete
  108. My favorite sound, besides the rain, is the call of a Black-Capped Chickadee. Their call reminds me of my childhood and how I would always call back to them.

When they start to call, I know that Spring is nearly here in Wisconsin.

    ReplyDelete
  109. That's a lovely story. I love the sound of rain too, but I prefer to hear it coming down on the roof while I'm warm inside. I also like to hear wind. And music, of course. And my kids...sometimes...when they aren't complaining. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  110. That truly sounds wonderful Keith.
My favourite sound is similar in that it also involves leaves. Near the end of summer here I look forward to 'hearing' the Quaking Aspens' leaves as a breeze gently caresses their leaves. I usually stop if I am in the garden and hear this. Quite lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  111. The rain is a peaceful sound on a warm spring day. But, I also love the bird songs and I am keeping a list of the birds I see. I guess I am nerdy. Thanks for the visit to my blog and for commenting. Have a happy weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Great post Keith. Must confess that I love the sound of rain too. I like it when I'm lying in bed and it's heavy enough to hit a rhythm against the window. Even better is the sound of rain on your tent when camping. I think it brings a soothing sense of security. Will be listening out for the rain on leaves next time I do a forest walk :)

    ReplyDelete
  113. I am a very sensitive person and I just love nature! I have more than one favourite sound, but I also love the scent of some things in nature.

My favourite sounds: the ocean, birds singing, cat's purr, rain, thunder storms.

My favourite scents: the ocean, rain, lavender, lilacs, fresh, crisp, clean air!

    Great post, Keith!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hi Keith, my favorite sound is the ocean, waves breaking on the beach. Something about it soothes my soul and helps me unwind like no other. I even have a CD of just the ocean and sounds of seagulls that I listen to when I am restless. I love to listen to the sounds of the night. It's so different from daytime noise. Sometimes I just go out, shut my eyes and listen. It's interesting what you hear. I love this post. C-ya, Susan

    ReplyDelete
  115. While I do really love the sound of rain (especially if I'm trying to sleep), my favorite sound is geese flying over my head. They're all honking to each other. It never ceases to make me smile, and laugh. Luckily, we have a lot of geese around these parts and I hear it often!!! Hope you have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Reading this was soothing.

The sound of water, whether it's rain, the ocean, a waterfall, a running stream; a meditation bell or church clock striking the hour; children laughing. These are just a few sounds that I enjoy, that come to me at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Hey Keith,

Yes, it's me, Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar! I love it when you go all twee on us. You remind me of how much my human and myself relates to such sounds. And thus, human friend... Listen very carefully. Can you hear those gentle sounds? The chirping of the happy birds. The rustling of the branches. The soothing and peaceful songs of the wind chimes. Sweet, sweet music dancing upon our ears and dancing in our souls. Behold, the orchestra of wondrous delight. Keith, you just love nature's symphony. Be well and I'm going now!

    Pawsitive wishes,

    Penny :)

  118. Rain tapping on a cottage roof at night is pretty close to the top of my list. That and the sound of ocean surf.

    Happy Weekend Keith, G :<)

  119. I like the sound of falling rain, but I must admit, my favorite sound is the crash of ocean waves.

  122. again a really neat topic. I love sound, and rain is a good one, but I'm going with a cat's purr, there's just something relaxing and centering about it.

  123. What a beautiful memory of sound! Rain is indeed one of earth's sweetest melodies - along with the laughter of children laughing.

  124. Keith, I could almost say that rain is my favorite sound now, since I heard it for three days straight on my trip to the coast. It's a lovely sound that I don't get to hear very often. But, I have to say, hearing bird song is my ultimate favorite.nespecially the meadowlark.

  126. I love the sound of a happy purring cat, but our recent experience on the overnight train to Chicago has got me thinking a train whistle in the sleepy night is a close second :)

  127. I started really becoming aware of the everyday sounds around me after watching the movie Eat, Pray, Love two years ago. I realized that I really love sounds, even something as mundane as teeth crunching into toast, or footsteps falling on a dirt path (both "crunchy" sounds, I guess! lol), or the sound of someone breathing across the room.

My FAVORITE sound? Sheesh, way to ask tough questions. I have a tie, I think, between two-- the first is the sound of the wilderness, whether it's wooded, desert, prairie, whatever. Just the sound of the empty space filled up with the tiny little lives within it does something to my spirit. It wells up and overwhelms me, makes me yearn to be truly... free. My second favorite sound is my fiance's truck when he comes home from work. For some reason, he always ends up owning trucks with distinctive sounds, and when I hear that noisy thing through the window, my heart gives a little leap because I know he'll be walking through the front door in just a few moments. It sparks anticipation, every time.

  129. Rain on leaves... so many songs have been written about rain. Some people get the blues when it rains and some people get energized. I think the latter is more true because of the negative ions that accompany falling water. Stand under a water fall if you ever want to get truly energized.

  130. the sound of rain is one of my favorites... I remember the only time I lived in a house (as opposed to apartments) I used to love the sound of rain on the roof...

  131. I love the sound of rain too. Especially on a roof or on water, like the ocean. So soothing. And the sound of babies laughing makes my uterus hurt I love it so much. I'm such a woman. haha

  133. The sound of silence when the snow has fallen so heavily that there are no cars and all I can hear is the sound of a silent blanket.

  134. In my dream world I would have a house by the ocean and hear the waves crashing onto land every morning. That's my favorite sound! =)

  135. The forest, first thing in the morning. A rattle of the woodpecker over there, a robin here, the pewee, the wood thrush, the vireo, the cardinal. Then to hear the breeze through the trees. Pure magic.

  136. Love the sound of water...sea, rivers, waterfalls... I can see why you like that sound. The scene you described reminds me of the film, ''Up''. :)

Sound is just as important as sight.

  137. The sound of great music with headphones pressed against my ears, so that there's no sound but the music. It's perfect to close your eyes and become lost in it. My favorite thing ever!

  138. What a beautiful article! I enjoy reading your messages, so right every time, though I never overrate sounds. I select them carefully as well as tastes, smells and visual surrounding. Always loved the sound of rain!

  140. Silence! I get so many crazy noises from my kids and my students. Sometimes I just need silence.

I also like hunting down bands and musicians that I've never heard of before. I post them on Saturdays. Some come from different countries. Looking for unique sounds is fun.

  143. What a beautiful post!

How can one pick only one favourite sound? There are too many to choose: the wuthering of wind in the pines; the gurgle and rush of a stream; a brilliant chorus of early morning birds - or one last birdsong at dusk; the sound of your parents saying "I love you" or "I'm proud of you"; crickets and tree frogs on a summer's night; the rumble of thunder and a steady rain o'er head, children play or a baby laughing; a poem or story read so well that you forget it is being read and not lived...
