If you do what you've always done...

I. LOVE. THIS. QUOTE. I have been thinking about this quote quite a bit of late. I love what it says and the message behind it. It resonates with me in a profound way. When I find a quote like this that resonates, I like to let the words soak in. I like to take the time to think about the meaning and how I can apply it to my life. So I've been doing just that.

To me it means this: if you want something different, you need to do something different. Sometimes a little boldness goes a very long way. We tend to expect change to happen magically. Sometimes though, you have to make your own change. It’s not always easy to be bold. In fact, it can be downright scary. But sometimes we are so worried about what could go wrong that we pay little attention to what could go right.
After all, the only chance regretted is the chance not taken…

What are your thoughts on this quote? What does it say to you?

  2. Einstein said something similiar, didn't he, about doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result?

Both versions are terrific, even if sometimes the excitement or challenge of the day is drinking coffee *without* sugar. :)

    1. I think the quote is "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

I usually follow that Einstein quote, because I'll catch myself thinking "Am I crazy?" and if my behavior fits the bill, then yeah, I am. Change is hard, and it's so easy to fall back into old habits.

  3. Great quote! I agree with being bold, it is necessecary to improve yourself & your life for the better - even though it can be scary!

  4. doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results...ha, its insanity surely...you def have to forge a new path...take the road less traveled....its not easy, but it is really living and not just going with the flow...smiles.

    ReplyDelete
  5. on the other hand, if you're doing what you really want to do, it could be ok. Being bold is scary, but you have a great point. It could be as simple as trying out a new product to start.

  6. What a perfect line:
"If you want something different, you need to do something different."

    I completely agree :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Loved the quote, very nice post, you always bring something amazing with each post :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. It says stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting things to change.

    ReplyDelete
  9. This reminds me of the quote "Be the change you want to see in the world."

It always makes me want to do something!

    ReplyDelete
  10. This is a quote we use in our house a lot...and it is so, so true.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree. Sometimes we get so mired in our own comfort zones we don't realize we're actually stuck. Change, new territory, new seasons of life...can be good.

    ReplyDelete
  12. This quote has been applicable to various stages of my life! So full of truth!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ah yes! Change it up. Try new things. Be adventurous! Live a little!
Let your hair down. Life is too short not to.
    Have an awesome day!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh I also love this quote it is so very true. If you never step out of your comfort zone you will never know. I did that this week and am hoping it was a good decision, nothing lost nothing gained.:) B

    ReplyDelete
  15. Love it! It's so simple and yet it's not necessarily easy to practice, is it? We get caught up in our routines, in our way of doing things, even when whatever it is we're doing isn't working. We do the same thing yet expect different results! Definitely needed this reminder today! :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes, things won't change if we don't make them change. Great quote!

    ReplyDelete
  17. it does speak to me--problem is i want to do something--but nothing is really holding any lasting interest for me these days---maybe i am in transition ----thanks for the push :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah sure need to try something new if you want a new view. But then if you like what you got, no need at your hut.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I also love it! I like how you let it soak in and marinate awhile, conscious deliberation. It reminds me of Einstein's quote, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when creating them." New answers require new approaches and action.
    Thanks Keith!

  20. To me it seems to be saying why don't I try something different, if not every day, at least once a week, to shake things up a bit. I'm happy with my life, and never bored, but I dare say new experiences would enrich my life, if not dramatically change it.
    Regards.

  21. This is the kind of kick in the pants I need - I have the opportunity to sell some of my art in a real store, but I'm nervous to make the leap. Can't make a change without changing myself! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love this quote too. It's also very true, and (in most cases) very easy to do!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Change in the routine path always let fear and uncertainity seep in but that's what it's worth for...isn't it? Different trees bear different fruits, want a diff fruit, try plucking it from a different tree...Pear tree can only bear pear, nature's course !!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Life is an adventure. If you don't take a chance, you'll be stuck in the same old grind. Doesn't mean I don't get freaked out sometimes. I kind of think it goes with the saying if it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger! Take a chance on life.

    ReplyDelete
  25. To me, it means I need to 'think out of the box'...to visualise what I want to happen, rather than what I don't want.
Because I believe that as we think, so we become!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I totally agree with you! Life is all about choices, if you choose something out of ordinary ended something different, take risk, take chances if that makes you happy at the end..:) Happy weekend, Keith

  27. I love this quote. I was actually talking about this with one of my dance professors about how dance is all about bravery. That we can't hold back because if we do what we always have done then the rest of the world will move ahead of us and we will be stuck where we were. We will end up behind. Change is progress

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think this is a great quote and reminder. I agree that it can be easy to get into the mindset that change will happen magically.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Go outside the box. Push the envelope so to speak. It certainly is important.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's kinda the flip side of the quote defining insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Both quotes reflect the acceptance of personal responsibility for end results. If I do A, then B is likely to happen. If I'm not a fan of B, then I've gotta stop doing A, doggone it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "The only chance regretted is the chance not taken"
    Love that quote!

    ReplyDelete
  32. This speaks to me about taking risks. I am generally not a risk taker, I think this pays off as a mom of four boys--someone around here has to think before acting..ha ;-) But this quote is a great reminder to me that some risks are worth taking.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It reminds me that my experiment in doing the 52s (trying something new every week)is a really good thing, making me step outside the familiar and do what I haven't done before.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've never had a problem with boldness when I see what I want. I feel like, right now, the change I need to make is more in the direction of trust. Trusting God, the Universe, the Process.

Have a beautiful day, Keith Wynn. Your musings make the world a better place.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It gives me goosebumps of excitement.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh this is so true, and most times if you just put yourself out there and try, you feel exhilarated and recharged.

    ReplyDelete
  37. like that definition of insanity, although this quote could refer to positive results too. So true but at times, what can we do except the same things...I guess if things aren't working, even small changes and adjustments do add up. good one Keith! thanks for sharing. :<)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh I see this and I get all stiff thinking about it. Even though I KNOW it is so necessary! The quote is true....going out of our comfort zone can only make us a better person.

    ReplyDelete
  39. excellent quote good to think on-thanks

    ReplyDelete
  40. "If you do not change directions, you will end up where you are heading."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Good one. I like Cassie's line too, and Jo's.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's spot on. If you don't change one thing or another you'll always get the same results. Now if those results rock then you might not want to change a thing.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love it, and I agree. I do want something different and have changed things to get myself out in the world more and I can can see changes already.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thought provoking quote!Change is constant. And,we should embrace it,rather than to fear.

    ReplyDelete
  45. When I married the second time I made sure I was not marrying the same type of man I did before. So I definitely believe and live out this quote. Great one!

    ReplyDelete
  46. An excellent reminder....I think I will print it out for my kitchen windowsil for a bit. I love to tuck things there to ponder when I'm washing up in the evenings. Closure and inspiriation at the same time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. It is a pretty accurate quote. There are some things you need to switch up if you're wanting change. There are some things you should keep doing, and some things you shouldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have been brave a few times and changed my life completely because I didn't want what I always got.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mom used to say, "There's more to do with a chicken than roasting it". You have to take a chance now and again and do something other than the usual.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's a great sentiment, and makes so much sense!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love this quote! Shows the importance of change and that we shouldn't be afraid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. our lives are created, one choice at a time. that is the gift God gives us.

btw, i gave you an award yesterday =)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well, this speaks to change and going out on a limb. Which is scary to some people who do not like change. I remember a quote from long ago "Craziness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" This is not the exact quote, but close to it. Life is so very boring with no change and no willingness to step out and try different things.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've heard that one before and it is one of my favorites! When I feel like I am in a rut or a funk, I remember this and try to change something up. It can be easy to settle into a routine and get comfortable, but we need to switch it up sometimes!

    ReplyDelete
  55. And sometimes what I've always got is exactly what I want! OTOH - isn't that sort of like the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So true. We can't keep doing the same thing expecting different results. We need to make a change if we want to see a change. Great quote Keith!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I like this quote, too. It's very meaningful. I have tended to wait in the background, waiting for change to happen. I have begun to realize that I have to DO different to GET different.

    ReplyDelete
  58. True. If you never take a risk, you'll never know what might be out there.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The quote is so very true! occasionally I have neglected to do something I should have, regretted it, and did the same thing later.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Keith, we have Russian proverb: "water does not flow under a lying stone". It means the same that this quote says: if you do not any new things you will have nothing new, no changes.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I totally agree with the quote, but the problem is that I don't know what to do and how to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh that's such a quick and clean impetus to change. Very clever. Don't expect anything new if you don't do anything new

    ReplyDelete
  63. Great quote. In order to see change, you must be willing to change. Taking that first step in a new direction is a little unnerving, but well worth a try!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Absolutely!
I've always agreed with the concept of "the road not taken."

    ReplyDelete
  65. Loved the quote, my friend. :)
I am actually on that phase...walking towards change in the self.
Thank you for sharing. God Bless.**

  66. Such a good quote Keith. Inspiring actually. Made me think of this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE-Krlqi4fk

    Dare you to move,

  67. I agree with you - love this quote too. Was going to quote Einstein's famous line, but see that other people are also having the same thoughts. Have a good weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  68. This is a quote to make you stop and think about how content you are with your life. I hope I'll always have the courage to change my future if I don't like the look of it.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I like that. Its easy to complain about life from the couch. Lately I've been inspired to make some changes and I like the results!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I agree. That's why I give myself the opportunity to reinvent myself.

    ReplyDelete
  71. To me the quote says 'take a risk' if you want change. Get out of your comfort zone if its something different you want.
It does make you think, and I think for some people it may apply intermittently throughout their lives, or at some crossroads in their lives and not others. For example the quote sits just right for me at this given time in my life.
    Cheers Keith!

    ReplyDelete
  72. This is fantastic, and completely along the lines of the mindset I've been trying to stay in. It's so important to remember that we have the power to be wherever we want to in our lives, and that we just need to take action. This is inspiration that I really needed right now. Looking forward to reading your future posts.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Great quote. I do agree it is time for a change!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Humm some people just cannot take chances.....
Lets celebrate their consistency and steadfastness

    ReplyDelete
  75. you are such a wise guy! Have a lovely day!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I am a big believer in this... and am constantly reminding myself of it too.

    ReplyDelete
  77. such a wonderful quote
    simple and full of truth

    ReplyDelete
  78. exactly right, my friend. even if you don't get what you were expecting, at least you're closer to knowing what you can accomplish.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I am still working on this one....hence the name for my blog..."One Foot Out Of The Box" :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes, life is constantly changing and we need to continually shift and adapt. To be honest, change is also mentally and emotionally exhausting. It's nice to have some consistency and continuity in life as well. It just moves too fast sometimes, and we need time to slow down and readjust ... to stay centered. Sometimes, we are resistant to change because there is too much pressure, and we must remember to be gentle with ourselves. Easy does it. Thank you for the inspiring post, Keith :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. I love quotes like you do... I collect them and they inspire me...

It sometimes seems I want the change to happen without making the different choices but this quote reminds me that I will continue to have the same outcome until I make that change.:)

    ReplyDelete
  82. One of my favorite quotes! It makes so much sense, yet we rarely see it right away. Loved this.

    ReplyDelete
  83. ah, to change a life.

    a beautiful, scary, rewarding thing.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Or perhaps as Einstein said, "Insanity -- doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Comfort is nice I think, but rot and stagnation aren't; sometimes we certainly do have to be bold and step out, to grow, to rise higher, to fulfill our potentials!

    ReplyDelete
  85. To me it means if you want something to change do something about it. You can't expect good and fun things to happen if you don't take changes once in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Fortune definitely favors the bold! :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yeah, I love it! Do something different, be daring...
Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when George Costanza started doing things the opposite way from how he would usually do them, with fantastic results. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  88. It is a great reminder, isn't it? Nothing happens only by wishing it or thinking about it...thank you for this reminder, it is very useful when one is in a rut like the one I tend to fall into ; )

    ReplyDelete
  89. Great quote that needs to be spread around...but will the ones who need to see this, see this? Sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  90. I love the quote....I would like to think that change is in our hands ~ If we want to do something different, we must carve a different path starting today ~

    ReplyDelete
  91. Perfect quote. I love change and looking down a different road. In fact, I think I am past due for a change right now.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Very correct. I am kind of thinking along the same lines right now. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  93. It is so darn true and always sounds so easy. I just don't find it easy to do, unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  94. It's interesting that for some taking a bold step forward is different and new, while for others, being more cautious and aware is different. I think that pretty much everyone has something they would like to change or at least improve in their lives. This is truly an empowering quote to help catalyze that change!

    Lovely post!
    Mariamma

    ReplyDelete
  95. Change is always good. For some people it is easy and for some it is tough. So I guess the quote can be taken differently by different people.

    ReplyDelete
  96. There is a similar quote by Einstein i think that is something like "Insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"

This definitely resonates with me...particularly in unemployed land.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I like this one - it's so simple and so true - yet so difficult to break away from sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Life consists of a countless amount of lessons. The same lesson will be presented to us over and over, until we learn it. Once we learn it, we move on to the next lesson.

    ReplyDelete
  99. To me it means you've got to be ballsy and jump out of your comfort zone! Not always so easy to do...I tend to like my comfort zone :). Change is always good I try to tell myself....
    Love the quote!

    ReplyDelete
  100. To me it means "Live a Wild Life, don't be boring."

    ReplyDelete
  101. Such nice words.. It means take chances, take risk.

    ReplyDelete
  102. We tend to get mired in what we "should" do even when it doesn't work well.

    ReplyDelete
  103. It means do random nonsense to get different results.

    ReplyDelete
  104. routines are nice and it is scary to break through them...

    ReplyDelete
  105. "After all, the only chance regretted is the chance not taken…" :) I love that!
Live your life. There are no bad decisions. There is only your road... Believe it ... Go with smile in your heart even when it's raining day...:)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Yes...change is inevitable and healthy, to not accept it is to suffer.

    ReplyDelete
  107. That quote is definitely inspiring. I have heard it before, but it is one that one SHOULD have taped on one's bathroom mirror so that one has a chance to contemplate it each and every morning of one's life!

    ReplyDelete
  108. It says the truth. simply. I love change...I'm always looking for something new, something new to do...I welcome this quote because it tells me to move on :)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Another inspiring post. I'm not big on change. Half our family loves it and half not so much. The change lovers make life interesting and we make a place for them to land. It works for us. I guess I like change better sometimes when we instigate it ourselves instead of it pushing itself on us. But even then, things can turn out good in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  110. That saying is a lot like the old one... About only crazy people keep doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting a good result will happen THIS time.....

    ReplyDelete
  111. It's a quote to stop you in your tracks. Unadorned truth though it is, I suspect it's what most of us do most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I think this all comes down to courage. Being different first requires the action, and a lot of time those actions can be scary.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Great quote. This applies to parts of my life right now. I became aware several months ago that I wasn't going to change my work situation by wishing it to happen. It's going to take time, but I'm heading down a road I hope opens up when the time is right.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I have been fortunate in that change has often come knocking on my door. I think that some of the best changes have come to my life via world travel. Rolling stones gather no moss!

    ReplyDelete
  115. I LOVE THIS QUOTE TOO! It's a great reminder of how NOT to live your life :) I try to stay away from repeating actions that make me unhappy :)

    ReplyDelete
  116. I do not like change in any way ... because there was so much change in my life in the past ... "don't want to change a thing" ... ever again, if I had my way ...

    ReplyDelete
  117. To me it means, It's broke so fix it...... the opposite of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    ReplyDelete
  118. To me, this says: LAUREN STOP BEING A LAZY ASSHOLE AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I agree, if you want a situation to have a different outcome than it did the last time...do it differently.

    ReplyDelete
  120. That's the difference between average and great !!!

    ReplyDelete
  121. i love this! i am a huge believer in adventures!

    ReplyDelete
  122. We can fall into the customary and comfortable without too much trouble; we end up treading water. It might take a dose of personal evaluation and the courage to attempt change to break the habit.

    ReplyDelete
  123. agreed! I learned this the hard way after having a very mediocre life for the last year. If i continued to be boring and not chase after my dreams (after living what is considered "boring" for most college kids who party and travel their life away) I will die having so many regrets of things I never did when I was young. Having that kind of end of the year when I realize I need to do what I love for ME-which is why today I had an interview for editor of the TOTEM magazine at my school! :) Excited! thanks for another inspiring post! xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  124. I love this quote too..very inspiring
There is only one Life why not give it our best shot..

    ReplyDelete
  125. I've been saying this quote to myself all day actually when reflecting on the state of my love life of late. Lol sadly, I keep finding the same kind of guys- all wrong for me, so I've beeb quoting this all day to tell myself to do something- anything!- differently in love so I can bust out of this patfern of finding and ending up with the wrong guys. Food for thought for me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  126. That quote is so logical
of course you'll get what you always by doing the same things.
It also encourages us to take a chance and leave our comfort zones.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I am thinking that your blog gets an amazing number of comments. Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Keith,

It's about a choice. You can make a decision and get out of an uncomfortable comfort zone. Whatcha' reckon to that, Keith?

    ReplyDelete
  129. this is one of my favorite concepts.. Einstein knows better ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  130. It reminds me of Mohammed Ali's famous quote "A man who thinks the same at 50 as he did at 20, has wasted 30 years of his life".

    ReplyDelete
  131. Change is scary though isn't it? I think its human nature to be nervous about it.

    ReplyDelete
  132. To me it means that maybe you need to look to yourself for the way people react to you. If you don't like the reactions, then you need to figure out what you need to do to change so that they react differently, maybe you are putting things out there that you don't realise.

I am definitely getting bolder as I get older. Less tolerant of people overlooking me or walking over me. But you have to change your opinion of yourself, which can be a deeply fundamental thing.

    ReplyDelete
  133. For years this song lyric has helped me through hard times:
"I only know that I can change, everything else just stays the same".
If you don't like something in your life YOU have to take CONTROL of it. We all have the power to be happy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  134. This is a great reminder. Often times, frustration or ruts are just due to not trying something new. I often try to do the same thing the way, but expect different results. Funny how that doesn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I agree completely. This is a great quote and love your interpretation. Reminds me of the oft quoted saying, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. What I like most about this quote is how it's application is suitable and meaningful in such a wide spectrum of circumstances. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  136. I love this quote. It's a spin of my favorite quote that I swear I tell people at least once a month. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results." I need to listen to this quote more...definitely more in my real life! =)

    ReplyDelete
  137. I think we like to hope that good things will just happen to us, that we will be rescued from our problems. The quote is a good reminder to get up and "do" something about the things in our lives we would like to change.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I heard somewhere that humans only use 10% of their brain potential BECAUSE they always do what they always do. Makes me wanna do different things and/or the same things differently.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Hi Keith, love this quote! I am like yourself...when I find a quote that resonates with me I like to think about it deeply, reflect on it, see how it can help me to be a better person. Thank you so much for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Love this quote! I try to remind myself of this every time I'm apprehensive about trying something or approaching new things/people. 99.9% of the time I'm quite happy I stuck my toe in the water. :)

    ReplyDelete
  141. Absolutely, if you don't make a change yourself, no change will follow. funny how we keep running on our little wheel and wondering why we're not getting anywhere

    ReplyDelete
  142. Love this quote :-) It, too, is something I've been practicing of late ... changing my own actions and patterns and watching what new and different experiences and situation they create ... like a ripple effect ... can be very powerful.
