The Beauty of the Rain...

"Rain is grace. Rain is the sky giving to the earth; without rain, there would be no life." ~John Updike

For a brief moment this morning it wasn’t just raining. It was pouring outside….and I loved every second of it. Raindrops were dancing off of my windows and jumping off of the pavement. They were blowing with the wind and running off of the roofs and windows. They were making their way through the leaves of the trees, and pooling together into endless puddles and miniature lakes on the ground. Raindrops are amazing. As they are being poured upon the earth they simply make the most of the moment. They splash and dance and they have the ability to make a “dreary” day look alive and cheerful.

On days like this I feel happy and amazed at the beauty of spring. Spring is so symbolic…it’s a lot like life. In fact, if I were asked to describe spring in one word, it would be just that…”life”. Spring warms and revives us.  We need the moisture of spring not only to help the earth grow, but to help us to grow as well.  And so this morning it rained….and rained and rained.  It is every bit as beautiful as sunshine…just in a different way.

Do you find beauty in the rain?

  7. Rain rainy rain! I totally love it too and look forward to its visit all through the year! I especially love it when it comes around with ze mateys Thunder and Lightning! Before I forget, can't say I could come up with a better song of the rain as you have so effortlessly put out!

I used to love rain when I lived in a rain state. We don't have rain or snow, anymore in Montana. What is going to happen to us?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Absolutely. Especially remembering it while in the midst of an April 10th snowstorm of 8 inches.

I no longer even remember what spring is supposed to look like in Minneapolis.

  11. April showers bring May flowers! Yes, love the rain, the cleansing and the promise.

  13. I find rain comforting and cozy - when I am inside! As a kid I loved Fall thunderstorms...

  14. It's raining here today too, and yes, I do find beauty in the rain...such beauty!
I love the way the raindrops hang, suspended from the daffodil petals and laurel leaves...the way they catch the light and reflect every colour of the rainbow.
But most of all I love the sound of raindrops in the forest.
To me, that is REAL music! :)

  15. This post put me in crave for rain... simply beautifully described the spirit of rain dancing around you.

For me rain is one of my inspirations in life!

  21. on a perfect summer day it is quite beautiful

    ReplyDelete
  22. We don't have much of a spring here in FL, but I do love an occasional good rainy day, especially when I don't have to go out and can stay all tucked up inside. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. The rain is beautiful indeed, singing in the downspouts and drumming on the roof....unfortunately this morning our rain is freezing. Nasty.

    ReplyDelete
  24. you know, honestly i used to love the rain and not so much anymore--but i am trying to change that---it can be very lovely---adore the picture today :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lovely post! Rain is beautiful. It's soothing and healing to the earth. It's sunny and hot here today--supposed to be in the 80s. Too hot too soon! Some rain would be nice.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love to open up my front door and watch the rain pour down. It's even better during a thunderstorm - unless of course it's accompanied by a tornado warning....

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do love the rain - for a couple of days anyway. I've even gone out to play in and jump in the rain. But rain for many days or weeks - too long! sandie

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do. Lovely topic for a post, Keith.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love the smell of it..though don't feel like going out when its too slicky...still the view and smell is enough to soothe me and the earth too :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love rain, it is very refreshing to smell the dry dirt being soaked by rain.
I love the picture you have here.

  32. That photo is so gorgeous. Last night we had a lot of rain and I really enjoyed it. It was warm, so we had the back door open and I just loved listening to the rain fall. It was still raining when we went to bed, so I got to fall asleep to the sound of the rain. So calming and peaceful!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh yes, as long as it doesn't rain for days and days at a time. I love walking in the early morning when it's raining. I love listening to the rain drops fall on the leaves and also on my umbrella. : )

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love rain! And I love what you say that it's as beautiful as sunshine, just in a different way. Great description.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The most beautiful about rain is, It makes me just wanna crawl up on my blanket and fall asleep. Lovely post! Keith

  37. Totally love the rain...the sounds, the smells, the wildness of a great storm.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A beautiful piece. We had rain this morning, too, for the first time in months. All does indeed feel newly alive~

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes, I find beauty in the rain if I'm inside and warm and dry. If I'm out in the rain not so much.

    Have a terrific day. ☺

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love when it rains too. And I don't mind thunderstorms if we're tucked up in the house safe and sound.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love to be outside when it's raining, especially in the summer ... I love to be wet from the rain. I love to walk barefoot through puddles. I love to be rain ... Be everywhere and nowhere ...

    ReplyDelete
  42. liquid sunshine....and yes I do appreciate rain!Have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love rain! The sound is comforting, it is romantic, and I love the way the earth smells after a good spring rain!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Only when the temp is warm and rains. It's peaceful to listen to it.

I don't like cold weather and rain. Road conditions get nasty then. I don't even like being out in it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I never realized the wide variety of rain until I traveled around and experienced many rainy places. I loved the rain in Southern California, where I grew up. Fresh, warm, invigorating, clean. There's nothing more wonderful than the scent of fresh rain.

Here in Texas the rain (which is very rare) is much like everything else - - dirty, ugly, and miserable.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love rain too. Living in a rainy climate (Seattle) I do wish for more sun though!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Beautiful post. I love listening to a good rain. I retired to a semi-desert climate and missed the rain but the last few years our springs have been very wet, hard rains, some thunderstorms, feels like home. Especially at night if I can go to sleep with the sound of rain on the roof.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Keith! Lovely post ~ picture and words! I love rain, and we certainly need a lot of it here in drought-stricken Colorado! Our rains are often gully-washers, cutting and powerful. In the Colorado summer, thunderclouds will boil up mid-afternoon, and rain will pound down. I well remember several exciting door duty rain events as a third grade teacher. We actually had to run outside and rescue kiddos who had been flattened by the wind and rain! Adventurous rain is my favorite!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I absolutely love the rain. It's a little depressing but one of my favourite things to do in the rain is stand in it and its as if I'm crying.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What a beautiful post, Keith!!

    Have a terrific day!

  51. YES. We Aussies appreciate every drop of water that falls!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I adore rain, listening to it, watching it, standing in it (not the cold stuff so much!) and the smell... just after the rain has stopped (more so in countryside!) the ultimate grassy freshness!

  53. We get rainstorms here so strong, it's as if it's coming down in buckets. It's a peaceful sound.
(Unless a hurricane is attached to it - then not so peaceful.)

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's a beautiful quote. Yes, I find a lot of beauty in rain. It inspires me. On days like today, when I can hear the drumming of rain on the roof and open the window and smell that wonderful spring-rain smile, I find I'm most creative. These are days for writing and reading. I love them.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Your photo is dripping with beauty! I can almost feel the wet through my screen. I also find rain is so good for sleeping! LOVE the Updike quote, and it is so true!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Unfortunately where I live rain tends to be dangerous... The expression "it never rains but it poars" is definitely applicable to this part of Spain! :o(

I used to love playing in the rain as a kid! Nothing like a like summer rain...

    ReplyDelete
  57. oh how I love the rain and even more so a big huge thunderstorm brewing in Tucumcari headed my way an just a few hours!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, I love when there's a downpour. There is something so magical about it. And I love the sounds it makes as it crashes against the windows, the doors the roof, and the way it slams into the earth. And I especially enjoy watching the raindrops bouncing and dancing around in the bird bath.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I do. I love listening to the rain in the comfort of my apartment in SF. I don't necessarily love being out in it, though. ;)

  60. If I'm honest I have a love/hate relationship with rain right now. I do love the green it brings but we get some hard rains in S. Africa and on a tin roof, it drives me a bit mad. We're putting a ceiling in soon so maybe then I won't hate the rain so much. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love it in the rain. I like listening to the rain hitting the ground, the roof and I like the thunder that sometimes comes along with it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. What a beautiful photograph. I love the rain, but here is South Africa it is usually accompanied by some nasty thunder storms.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love the sound of it at night, and it's a blessing in summer when we have had several hot days in row and the plants are desperate for a drink.

    ReplyDelete
  64. :) I do find beauty in rain. I LOVE the sound. It's so relaxing. Growing up in Ohio it rained often. Now that I live in Wyoming it's a rare treat. (We get lots of snow, but no rain!!) When we do get it I love it. I prefer sunshine everyday, but a good thunderstorm and downpour is very soothing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I do find it beautiful. Traveling has let me see how different rain can be all over the world. In Northern California the weather is very dry so the rain clouds stay far up into the sky and it doesn't pour often. When I was in Tennessee a couple summers ago the clouds lingered so close to the ground and made the flat landscape seem even flatter. The storms would suddenly appear out of nowhere. I remember watching the the clouds darken and swirl so quickly and then it poured. Here in Rio the landscape is much more mountainous with even more humidity than the south so the clouds envelop the mountain tops even on sunny days. I love that thunder and lightning accompany almost every rainstorm here. And the sound of raindrops hitting the top of my umbrella is probably my favorite sound in the world... right behind babies laughing....

    Lovely post, as usual :)

  66. I have always loved the rain ever since I was a little girl. I often go for a walk in the rain with my camera.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I LOVE the rain. When we lived in Vegas we so rarely saw it. I am especially grateful for rain this wee, because we just overseeded the lawn! :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I kept thinking spring was here...actually here but then winter dropped back in with its cold and I don't like that. I love the storms of mid to late spring. It's been dry as a bone mostly here...we could use some big thunder bursts! I think rain photos are a blast too!

    ReplyDelete
  69. There is only rain in beauty. Only beauty in rain.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I do love the rain. I always find inspiration to write new songs when it rains :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. nothing makes me happier than a warm spring rain.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love the rain, unless it's a winter rain with some sleet in there. Then it's just yucky. If it's a nice medium rain and warm outside, I'm that crazy person who goes walking around just to feel the wet dirt squish between my toes. There's nothing more spring to me than a rainstorm and mud puddles.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's wonderful that you loved the rain. I tend to think I belong in Arizona, but that's a whole different story. I like to watch it pour when I don't need or want to go outside, and I truly do appreciate the cleansing feel of a good rain, but...

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think you can find beauty in everything. What a special quality!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Love the beauty in the contrast of rain and sunshine. "Rain is grace". . . . . for me is simple, direct and eloquent. Gorgeous photo, post and imagery.
Welcome rain, welcome spring, welcome sunshine.
    Thank you Keith.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Rain is absolutely amazing! Especially when it's a warm rain on a summer day when the sun is still shining. That's magic right there.

However, it's been raining all week and it has not been warmer than 40 degrees. Not the best, but at least it's not snow!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love rain Keith... especially if it's warm rain... I can walk in that kind of rain and really enjoy it... :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. It is not the rain that I mind, it's the storming that sometimes comes with it, particularly during this season.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I like the rain and it has been raining here all week ~ What I don't like is the hard downpour, especially when I am driving and can't see a thing ahead ~ But yes, there is something magical about rain and spring ~

    ReplyDelete
  80. It's the most soothing sound. So comforting. :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Normally, I hate downpours, but last night night I loved it. A couple weeks ago, I had the drainage improved in my yard, but I hadn't had a chance to see how effective it was. So I said, let it pour! This morning, when I woke up, instead of Camp Swampy and ducks, I just had a few puddles.
So that was money well spent.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Oh yes, I see the beauty in rain. From a practical view, living in an arid region, we need the rain to restore our pastures. We need the rain to prevent our wildfires. But from a personal view, I love how soft the air becomes in the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love rain when it's not accompanied by wind. It is soothing to watch.

ps.....you'd probably like a song by Suede (or The London Suede in USA) called 'When The Rain Falls'. Similar to your own aspects of beauty in a downpour!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Thank you for this post. I definitely needed it. I love the rain so so much. :) Beautful

    ReplyDelete
  85. A wonderful way to look at rain. After our long wet summer with three flood threats, rain isn't as welcome at the moment. Hoping for a drier autumn right now.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Rain and snow are my two favorite things. I could literally stand outside and watch it for hours. The sound of rain, the smell, and the way it looks are just so mesmerizing!

  89. We have been deficient on rain for over a year now so all rain is welcome. I love spring too, when everything is green.

    ReplyDelete
  90. It rains a lot here and this morning I had a rather unfortunate experience with it that I posted to my blog just now. However, when I'm not having to drive in it, safely at home, I actually find it very relaxing.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I adore a good rain, and even a good thunderstorm. Nothing is more peaceful than the sound of rain parading across the roof and thunder rumbling in the distance. It makes me feel so snuggy and safe inside, especially when I'm all tucked in bed and just starting to doze off. So peaceful. =3

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have a love-hate relationship with rain. It does have a romantic connotation, when you're indoors all cozy and just listening to the sound of it. It's necessary for growth and renewal. But too much of it can bring flooding and destruction. I hate it when it interferes with my plans to be outdoors. And I don't like driving in it. Yep, love-hate. :) I think it's great to see beauty and the good in all things. But it's also important to see the other side, to be aware ...

    ReplyDelete
  93. Human Keith,

Ah rain, I frolic in the puddles, listen to it tap, tap, tap upon our windows. Yes, I love rain. Although a bit of sunshine would be nice. Yes, the sun, the mysterious glowing orb in the sky. Do you like the sunshine, Keith?

Yes, you have been thrilled beyond belief in knowing that me, yes me, Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar has left you a comment. And being a clever dog, I shall share your posting in the true spirit of altruism.

    Pawsitive wishes,

  94. Keith, you're a mind reader - that description fits exactly how it was here in my town yesterday! and I agree with all of your sentiments. :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. As a child I used to get all emotional, sometimes even crying when it rained. Maybe it had something to do with not being able to see the sun.

Now I like it, though. Since I live in North India, it is warm here for at least 8-9 months a year, rain is kind of welcome every time. Except very near to harvest season.

    ReplyDelete
  96. The rain is wonderful. It seems to relax everything. I also love the smell of the desert after a good rain.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yes, I like to stand on the porch and watch it come down. And listen!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I love a good rain storm. I like the sound of it and the smell of it! In fact that is my favorite sound on my sleep app.

    ReplyDelete
  99. excellent post...I am just waiting for the rain to start again. We had our first thunderstorm of the spring season last night.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I love the rain so much. I will take a rainy day over a sunny day anytime. I don't know what it is about it, but I love the rain!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Our climate is enough cool, lots of rainy and wet days. So I love rain in sunny and warm days when the water goes fast away, and rain quickly stops. Now in early spring here the rain makes snow to melt so I wait for rain!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I love love love rain -- everything about it is wonderful, the sight, smell, sound of it. When it rains here, it pours, and there's such a satisfying pattering on the roofs, and the air smells so clean. We love the monsoon season here, so welcome after months of sweltering here; it's sort of like your fall/wintertime :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Ok - let me write that again - I was half asleep!

I'm not a fan of the rain to be honest but that's because we get too much of it over here! However, I like it from a photographic point of view and get some beautiful pictures. Someone once said to me "You're the only person I know that can make art out of rain!"

    ReplyDelete
  104. I loved tropical rainstorms when I lived in Malawi. I still love the rain, except for when it seems to go on for days....

  106. Hi Optimistic,
I just love rain! It's refreshing...It adds life to life! :)
The rain drops are so beautiful, you are right they appear to be dancing.
Rain is much awaited for farmers.
    I loved your post.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yes, agreed! rain -- in moderation -- is a true gift of God.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Not when you have to cycle home, we had a downpour yesterday and it was cold and wet and I was cycling.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hi Keith .. we had rain recently too - makes such a difference from snow!! It's raining lightly now ...

The lands will be so much fresher and that smell of the earth = wonderful!

    Cheers Hilary

  110. I love brief, spring showers swiftly followed by warm sun; it's so vital for everything to grow and flower. But for the last twelve months it has rained too much here; and so it quickly lost its beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Beautiful post and lovely picture.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Exactly....let the rain come down, oh Lord, let the rain come down!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Definitely. We got a lot of it during the night last night...a good pollen washing...

    ReplyDelete
  114. I like that you seem to be optimistic by nature - I know rain is good and that we need it but I can't quite bring myself to like it - maybe because on the whole we get too much of it here in the UK.

    ReplyDelete
  115. It's raining where I am too! I love the rain because it's so peaceful! Also I love how you personified the rain in this post keith! Your writing made it feel alive! =)

    ReplyDelete
  116. We have had rain for DAYS here. Gray and rain. I wonder if this is a second "Flood." I have seen beauty in rain at other times, but right now I see no beauty in it at all and just wish it (and the gray sky and wind) to go.

    ReplyDelete
  117. What a great picture...indeed I enjoy rain, a good hearty rain, not a teaser...and of course not forever. When I lived in the relatively South I experienced what appeared to be endless rain...first amazing, then tiring, then rediscover the beauty...enjoy your lovely rain. : )

    ReplyDelete
  118. What a gorgeous pic, perfectly framed in the leaves! I adore rain UNLESS it goes on for weeks on end, with no sunny breaks. We get too much of that here in Interior BC. But a nice, heavy rain to refresh everything is heavenly.

    Lovely post Keith!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Because I grew up in the desert, rain (or even a grey, cloudy day) has always been a special treat to me. Some of my treasured memories are of the two times that a tropical storm blew through our city. It rained so hard that it flooded-- something I'd NEVER seen before. (THEN I understood what all those sandbags were for!)

I've since lived in the Midwest a few times, as well as the upper Northwest, but even there where precipitation is commonplace, it never failed to bring happiness to my heart. I learned that snow is also a joyful thing... but you're right. There's just something about rain.

Now that I'm back in the desert, I can honestly say that the one and only single time I've ever NOT wanted it to rain was on my wedding day. (I had banked on the fact that it literally only rains like, 5 days out of the year here, and had no plan B!) Now that that's over... bring on the rains!

  122. I woke up in the middle of the night to a torrent of rain on the roof. Just like a song. I especially love the air right after a storm in summer when the mist is still clinging to the air. Beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  123. I love the rain... preferably a warm rain :)

    ReplyDelete
  124. I do love rain. Especially when I wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of rain on the roof. I have a downspout right by my bedroom and I can hear the water gurgling down. Thunder and Lightning storms are my absolute favorite. The true power of nature to see and to hear. I love the scent of the Earth after a rain shower. Let's dance in the rain! xx

    ReplyDelete
  125. Nice tribute to the rain, but I do prefer sunshine and a cool breeze, a perfect day for snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, Hawaii.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I feel like we have to much rain! I much prefer sunlight and a slight breeze, however if I am tucked up in bed and don't have to go out in it the rain makes me feel all cosy! :)

  127. you know what I miss the most about a raining day? running outside... free...

    ReplyDelete
  128. Yes, such loveliness and revitalization.

    ReplyDelete
  129. You make it sound so sweet and tender. Last week, it rained buckets for days. I was just so glad that it wasn't snow that I didn't mind one bit. But...while I like cloudy days, I am not a fan of rain in general. I have rheumatoid arthritis and it makes my bones ache like you wouldn't believe. Kind of sad.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I think perhaps you are getting a brief, warm rain. ;) We had very cold, icy rain today. Not so pretty. But I am aware we need rain, and I do enjoy hearing it on the rooftop at night (when I don't have to go out)!

  131. Rain is my favorite weather, hands down. I should have been born in Seattle. Or England.

  138. we had rain this week too...but it was in the form of sleet. frozen drops aren't as fun...but then it gave up and just turned to snow. longing for a warm rain.

  139. I love the life that spring brings and April showers that spatter and dance on the earth below.

(If its cold stuff - I prefer to view it from inside. :o])

  140. I probably didn't appreciate rain too much last year as well, we had too much! The summer was a washout and there were floods everywhere and it was the second wettest year on record. But I can appreciate the power of a downpour and can imagine that in some parts of the world, rainfall would be a great blessing for parched lands. It's raining here right now, I can hear it pattering on the window sills.

  142. I don't mind rain, but I hate when I have to walk around campus in it. Being tall, the umbrella only covers about down to my thighs...

  143. Once you have lived through a ten year drought - when it felt like it would never rain again - its hard not to like it!

My other thought on rain is that people only find it frustrating because they think they will stay dry in the first place. Once you acknowledge that you are going to get wet, getting wet is less of a problem!

  145. Nice photo! Yes...there is much beauty in the rain. It poured here a couple of weeks ago and I loved it. I stopped what I was doing to look out the window and lose myself in the pounding rain.

  146. The last thing I ever did with my friend Josh was dance around like crazy fools in a crazy summer rain storm. He shortly passed away, unexpectedly. Whenever it rains I can't help but find him.

  149. I really enjoy the rain. That's one of the reasons I love Portland so much. I like the way you described the drops as 'dancing.' : )

  150. As I read this, it's pouring outside. I live in a climate controlled house. Windows and doors always closed. But I had the windows open and listened to the rain. It was as if it were the first time I'd heard it. My three-year-old grandson was amazed at the sound of the rain. I don't think he'd ever really heard the rain before today. Yes, he'd been in rain before, but I don't think he'd ever heard the sound of it falling off the house.

  151. I don't particularly like to go out in it, but I love to snuggle down inside when it's raining outside. Love to sleep to the sound of "life" splashing on the roof and windowpanes:)

  152. i wish it was raining here instead of snowing!

  153. never thought I would say this but i MISS rain. I used to live on the wet west coast of Canada where it can rain for months. I've been on the east coast for almost 4 years now and I never see rain anymore like that. While I don't miss the months on end grey days, the sound of rain on the roof while falling to sleep is a sound I quite miss.

  154. Great photo!I also like rain + summer storms a lot. It is nice when after a warm summer day there is a big storm coming and you can watch the thunders.

  155. I like the word life to describe spring. It's a good thing you like the rain because those of us located in the Southern states are about to get a lot of it (hopefully) with the warm weather coming. :)
