Springtime

"Can words describe the fragrance of the very breath of spring?" ~ Neltje Blanchan

I am an unapologetic lover of all things winter. I love the cold air, the snow, and the atmosphere! I know I know, many of you are probably cursing me right now after this long winter. But I have always been a winter person at heart.

That being said, I do love that feeling in the air as springtime finally arrives. It is as if Mother Nature is slowly waking up from a long winter’s nap. I love how everything begins to slowly come alive and turn green, I love how the bird's songs become happier, I love the spring rain showers and how they nourish the earth back to life, and I love the start of baseball season!! (go Reds!).

So as we welcome the arrival of spring, I hope you all can forgive me for wishing this snowy winter upon us :) but I must say it was nice having a snowy winter around here for once!

What are you most looking forward to about spring? What is your favorite thing about springtime?

  1. I do get tired of all the dead brown around here, although spring does mean I have to start mowing the lawn again.

  2. Right now, I'm looking forward to Holly feeling better. She's already showing signs of improvement and I'm thrilled. Other than that, my birthday is just around the corner and I always look forward to that. I'm hoping we can start planting soon as well. It's been such a rough winter and last summer was especially rainy. It would be nice to just have a quiet spring. If only it would get here already!

  3. Get out of furcoats and feel as light and carefree as a butterfly!

  4. Hi Keith .. I love the longer days and much more light .. and we may have had a wet winter this year (very wet in some parts) but at least we're not under a blanket of snow and ice, which we're not geared up to live in ..

So I'm glad Spring is springing .. we're in for a cold week - but it is lighter and being on the coast it's warmer, and often sunnier as the clouds skid inland ... cheers to Spring I say! Hilary

  5. Honestly, even though this winter has been hard, I still, and always have, loved the winter, Keith. I am also a winter person!

  6. Well, I do worry about that extra hour of sunlight and setting the clocks back!
It would seem that with global warming and all we wouldn't want more sunlight. In all seriousness, it is Tomato Season for me! and I do look forward to my garden.

  7. I look forward to spring because this year our winter is SOOOO long and so cold, and we had a ton of snow. What I enjoy most about spring....buds on trees, the greening of grass, the flowers when they first pop up, walks with dogs, wearing shorts & t-shirts. That being said, as I write we have a temperature outside of 17 degrees F, and snow is forecast tomorrow. Sigh.

  8. I love Spring so much. It feels like everything is coming alive. I love when the weather first breaks, that day when you finally get to sit outside after being cooped up inside all winter. Oh, and it always helps to have a beer in my hand during that first magical day :)

  9. One of my favorite parts of Spring here is that's when the sandhill cranes have their babies. I love stopping to watch them, and I love how other people do the same.

Oh, and I'm with you on baseball - Go Rays! :)

  16. Spring comes and no snow what so ever, insert curse for you lol, that is the best

    ReplyDelete
  17. I sooo agree with you! Winter is my favorite season, I love the crisp air, the snow, the no bugs...

But I do love the spring as well, because of the trees, the ridiculously beautiful flowering trees.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ah, springtime!
Flowers - they are beautiful! Let them grow

    ReplyDelete
  19. I curse you for loving winter! ah ha

You already know how I feel - bring on the heat, baby!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Vive la difference! I like all the seasons for different reasons. But your question relates to spring. It's the light, the sense of hope, of things to come. The first sight of flowers and the bud leaves on the trees. It's not having to layer up and wear boring winter clothes. It's a lot of good, sweet things!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love the colors of the flowers - I particularly love wildflowers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The knowledge that summer is just around the corner...all those fabulous sunny days (I hope!)...and, of course, ice creams on the beach!!

  24. I think those who love winter (I do too) love the changing of the 4 seasons, period. It's the harshest of winters that produces the sweetest of springs!

    Have a good week!

  25. My favorite thing are the rich, lush colors that seem to come suddenly, out of nowhere.

  26. I love all the seasons, and I have no trouble admitting I love the snow. I am convinced most people love it as well, but the socially correct thing to do is moan and grown about it. However as much as I love winter and summer, both seasons are about 6 weeks too long.

  27. To me sSpring means;
Turning down the thermostat and lower power bills
    Wearing lighter clothing and footwear
Feasting my my senses on warm sun
Spring bulbs blooming in an array of fantastic rich colors
The smell of the earth warming up
The sight and sounds of returning birds building their nests
The trees budding and the maple sap running
    Longer daylight
No more falls from icy patches
No more shovelling and scraping ice off my car
    Better visibility around intersections
Going out to take more photographs
Watching the eagles building their nest in my lane
    Seeing people walking and biking
The anticipation of digging in the earth and planting seeds
Raking and mowing the lawn and tidying up
Open windows to let the fresh air in
Spending time on the swing on the deck
    Bar-B-Queing on the grill
    Washing the car and waxing
Watching the ducks on the water
Watching moms and dads pushing strollers.
Seeing old folks venturing out more freely
    Less time on the computer.

    1. The first line of your poem makes me laugh a little to myself, because where I live spring means the beginning of spiking power bills as the air conditioners start to get revved up. In winter we mostly just leave the windows and doors open (screen doors closed, of course).

  28. I'm not the biggest fan of spring but I'll admit it's nice to see the critters again, and the flowers look lovely. If I could tone down my hay fever I'd be in heaven.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I noticed my tulips had peeped about 2 ins. out of the ground. How delightful. I love all seasons and anticipate each one with love. I can't live in a climate where there is no definite change of season. Althought I'm more than ready to see this past winter leave.

    ReplyDelete
  30. My favorite part of spring is when the weather finally stays warm. Here in South Carolina, we have a mix of cold and hot days for a couple of months.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm looking forward to Easter. I just love putting together thought provoking scavenger hunts. My kids have to think to find their eggs. :)

April Fools Day will be funny. I usually give my students a lengthy paper to do (it's fake and not in the syllabus). Then I saw on pinterest that someone gave their work Brow-E's. Just an empty pan with brown E's cut out, and foil on top. I thought that would be fun to take in. Everyone is going to think they are getting something good!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dandelion!! My favorite bouquets have always been made from Dandelions. :)

No comment on the snow. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm a winter person, too, Keith. I don't like hot weather. But I do like the spring days where it's warm during the day and chilly at night.

I love the flowers and blooms, especially the forsythia. To me, forsythia just says, New Life!

  34. Actually, it would seem that Old Man Winter has another "treat" in store for us the first few days of this week!

My husband loves to garden, and spring brings time for planing - potatoes, onions, other goodies. These do better with cooler temperatures.

    ReplyDelete
  35. sounds like you might need to relocate to canada! :)

  36. I love spring, it is the best seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Spring feels less spring-like in the UK with every passing year. Today, I went out with a thick jacket on, but my hands were so cold, and then it rained a lot. May seems to be the time springy weather appears - and, then, I love the sun, the wind, the ability to wear less layers, the need to wear sunglasses occasionally.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love Spring! everything just so beautiful.. and I can't wait to get started with my little garden.:)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Spring never got the memo here...today we likely break our record and hit over 100 inches of snow this winter. I still think if you really lived in winter like this you'd change your tune. I love to walk but seldom can :/

    ReplyDelete
  40. One of the things I love about spring is the way the air smells when the lilacs and apple blossoms are out. I try to breath as much of it as I can hoping it will last me through the winter. But mid winter I can't remember it at all, I also love sleeping with the windows open while the spring peepers sing us to sleep. I can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Spring is new! I agree it's like waking up from a long nap. Things are green and vibrant. Things are clean and new. Blossoms abound, whether it be on trees or flowers in the ground. The air smells fresh. And it's warm enough to dig in the dirt! Go Rockies!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops. Being comfortable. Watching the birds play. Hearing the birds. I love all things spring.

    Have a fabulous day. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love winter, also! Although I live in sunny southern California, so it probably doesn't even count as winter compared to the rest of the world. I love the cold and hate the heat, so I hope winter hangs around a bit longer this year.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like winter, too, but I think I'm ready to be done now. I really look forward to Spring as you describe. Oh - and when you said "Let's go Reds" - you left off the "ox" ;-)

  45. My favourite thing about Spring, is when we have one the last two years (although I'm a winter lover) we jumped also to the day from Minus 20 to high of 30s and humidity from Cold snowy Winter to Hot Humid Summer, I want to live A SPRING, PLEASE LET US HAVE A SPRING THIS YEAR

    ReplyDelete
  46. Spring is my least favorite season. It's the wind that kills me. But i do enjoy when the lilacs bloom

    ReplyDelete
  47. Want am I looking forward to? Warmth. Long days and golden sunshine, flowers, the songs of birds and peepers. Spring showers and the rich smell of the earth soaking it in. Green grass--altho hubs is groaning over that since it also means mowing the lawn. :-)

I don't mind winter and it has it's own beauty--as do all the seasons, but I find I tolerate the cold less and less and not real fond of the snowy icy paths I must traverse to do outside chores.

  48. I am looking forward to warm weather. I am so sick of being cold all the time! I want to put on sandals and dresses, I want to have cookouts with friends, walks after dinner with my family. Beach trips, riding with the windows down, and actually seeing green instead of white. I hate winter. I am seriously considering a move to a warmer state, especially after the winter we just had!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm also a winter fan. I discovered that when I moved up to north central Idaho. Now that I'm back in the clutches of the southwest, though, winter isn't as exciting. All of the old folks from up north that don't like the winter or can't handle it anymore flock to our section of the world. While it's great for the economy and what our economy is *dependent* on, it's still super annoying because they jam up the roads and are, for the most part, slow, terrible drivers. I mean TERRIBLE.

Anyway, we've had our spring already and are fast moving into summer. Spring only lasts one or two months around here, if that, and winter isn't really "winter" anyway. Our winter is most other places' version of spring, but our summer lasts foreeeever and is brutal. I wish the cooler weather would last longer. Alas… Thanks to my hubby's job, we're not going anywhere anytime soon, either. I've resigned myself to this weather cycle for 19 years now; I suppose I can do it for a little while longer at least.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I am so ready for spring Keith! My favorite thing about spring is the warmth and angle of the light. I am looking forward to the air being softer and more relaxed. Happy spring my unapologetic and positive friend.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ahh, Spring! It sounds so lovely! Unfortunately, we received snow showers again this morning...

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have always looked forward to the lilacs. Here in super hot So. Calif. Lilacs seemed out of reach. A lilac was created for this weather, and finally one bush has bloomed, after 3 years. the other bush has wasted time and energy on leaves.

  53. I always like the holiday season of winter but after that I"m done.

I love when spring begins. I love the smell in the air and the buzz of everything coming back alive. I even think Joe and I do better once spring comes around again. I feel more connected to spring every year.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I live in Michigan. Our winters are always so cold and snowy. I enjoy the holiday season, but by January I'm craving the outdoors and nice, sunny weather. My favorite thing about spring is simply how refreshing it it. I love the arrival of rain, leaves on the trees, and tolerable weather!

  55. Oh yes...there is so much to love about spring...more daylight, flowers, baseball...the feeling of the earth waking up again.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I too, don't mind winter, and prefer cooler temps to very warm ones. Even so, it is nice to see signs of spring. Overall, fall is my favorite season, but we've a little ways to go before that rolls around again. Have a great week! :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love all the first signs: green blades here and there, clover, trees budding, that first day of warm sunshine. Worst part if spring- those awful storms and tornados.

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is when the violets pop up in the lawn even though some think they are weeds. I love them, so tiny and they smell good. Best of all for me is longer days and more light.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Give me a few months and I'll be right in there with you wishing for winter. Summers and 100 + temps wear me out. Doesn't cold air just smell cleaner and better??
Sure hope Aroldis Chapman recovers nicely. That was an awful accident. May both our teams do well.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I am like you, I like winter, and it makes sleeping very good, too. I think we need all four seasons in order to appreciate each one when it comes. I cannot imagine living in a place that is one season all the time!! We are getting snow tomorrow!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I wish so much we had a little bit of the winter that you had! Can you wish for the snow to reach us at the end of this year, too, please? :)
I'm looking forward to longer days so I can go for walks in the sunshine after work, and I look forward to having breakfast outside and simply enjoy nature in every possible way. Love watching it waking up, too!
But most of all spring brings the love of my life close to me....I can't wait for it to finally be here! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. My favorite things are: no bugs yet, the flowers popping out, and the birds singing. I feel like my own soul is waking from a long hibernation. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. The lambs. They are so innocent and cuddly and full of joy.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I most love the explosion of color. Atlanta is one of the most beautiful places in the world in the spring. Flowers and blossoming trees EVERYWHERE. Of course, with the good, we have to accept the bad. The pollen count here is astronomical.

    ReplyDelete
  65. What I love about the changing of the seasons is that you appreciate what you have when you have it.

This winter was brutal, beautiful, and long. However, once spring arrives we all feel so grateful!

I also love that you have dandelions as the photo! My favorite!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I am looking forward to warm air, sunshine, going out in a tank and running pants and not worry I will lose a limb from freezing... lol

I think all of us that do not like winter will be ever so grateful and thankful once it is over and hope that another one like it NEVER happens again... it was much too long and I am Canadian... I am used to winter but not this (even Canadians have their breaking point, haha)... I am glad you enjoyed it though :) Have a great day Keith

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love spring! Unlike you I can't deal with the winter too well. When the weather starts to get warmer my mood is immediately lighter-- I can feel myself waking up more and more each day :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I love Spring. I love gardening, and getting all my flower beds ready. I love the warm weather, and wearing flip flops and shorts. But the best thing about Spring is- It's almost Summer, and I LUV Summer.

    ReplyDelete
  69. ...and i'll bet you like summer and fall as well! An outdoors person tends to like all seasons and cope with each one.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love seeing all the brown turn to green and pretty colors. Everything gets to start out fresh once again.
I really do enjoy all the seasons. I've loved all the snow this year too.

    ReplyDelete
  71. You never know, we might even get a decent spring round here. It’s unlikely, spring, summer, autumn and winter are much the same as each other. That’s a temperate climate for you.

But I like the idea of a slightly milder winter this spring and possibly an even milder winter this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Back Road wandering.......♥ I love Winter too.....

    ReplyDelete
  73. Not a fan. I love wintertime. During the springtime the bugs start to come back out..not a fan.

The weather gets hotter...not a fan.

I have to use my air conditioner and it makes a lot of noise so I have to turn my tv up..not a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hey Keith! You say you want snow?? I'll give you snow!! Come on over. ;)
Because winter lingers so long here, springtime is fleeting. We practically go straight into summer. But,I adore springlike days, daffodils smiling in all their yellowness. Happy happy spring. And bunnies!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Spring is my favourite season. I love everything about it. Awakenings, the excitement of the animals as they prepare to create families, the weather, spring fever, birds returning from the south...and on and on. It is an amazing time of year.

    ReplyDelete
  76. With spring comes summer and I love the sun, but then comes fall and winter, and how could I love the summer without the winter.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love all of birds as they sing in the morning. I even like the ones who make alot of noise because their feeder is empty. Santa Fe is even more beautiful when everything is green and more people our out and about.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Blueberries. Ours are already blooming.

    ReplyDelete
  79. One of my favorite things about spring is when the snow starts to melt and the water runs down the side of the streets. And the fresh feeling and smell of the air. I like the cooler warm weather. But spring takes on a new meaning now that I have furry little Mina in my life: muddy paws. :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Winter was so bad last year that I think everyone is looking forward to spring time. But give it time until summer and everyone will complain about the heat.

    ReplyDelete
  81. "many of you are probably cursing me right now after this long winter" Oh man you can say that again. xD The birds really do get happier, don't they? I love it. I love the color that spring brings.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I love this season mainly for the beautiful weather - neither too hot nor too cold :-)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Blessings.....
I am most looking forward to feeling the temperature, its the best time of year for me. I also love the rebirth of things, gives a sense of hop.

Just stopped by from Beth's place, thought I'd say hello and wish you a great week.

    peace.

    ReplyDelete
  85. So, this awful winter is all your fault! LOL! I love the warm weather, the flowers and enjoying the great outdoors. I love the birds chirping and seeing the baby birds, the colors of the trees and flowers..Have A HAPPY DAY!

  86. Oh dear Keith. I am an unashamed winter hater! However this winter in Scotland has been so mild I enjoyed it! Spring though is my favorite season by a long way. I love the sudden growth and the fleeting early blooms. They are a reminder that every moment is precious and must be enjoyed.

    ReplyDelete
  87. What a most like about spring is that it is not summer! Winter is not the problem here!

    Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne

  88. I love all four seasons, but this time winter gave us a lot of hard work. It is harder for people with health problems. I welcome spring with open arms.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I moved to this valley almost 5 years ago, that's when I experienced triple digits...that's when I started appreciating the cold months. The sense of rebirth and renewal that Springs brings is wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  90. New green leaves! I have been loving the snowy winter, as well, but it is about time that spring gets here :).

    ReplyDelete
  91. Keith! You're a fellow Winter lover? I don't believe it. We are a rare breed indeed!!! (But I do love Spring too!)

    ReplyDelete
  92. I love May and September...where I live...those two months are perfection..climate and the feel of change in the air...I'm with you though...I love winter!!!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Here in Southern California we don't have much of a winter. Ever. So we probably don't feel that relief when the snow and slush and cold are finally (FINALLY!) gone. But I do love a nice day in April or May when I feel the first stirrings of desire for an afternoon sitting on the sand at the beach. That first thought to sit outside for just a few minutes in the sun - just to get a little glow (even though we know it's wrong, so WRONG). But then again, I also get very excited about a good rainstorm. And if there's thunder and lightning? Be still, my heart! If you're weather deprived, you're just all goofed up.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I love the sound of the birds in spring-- and the thought of picnics-- and hopes of beach vacations-- hmm I guess I will forgive you for the winter;)

    ReplyDelete
  95. longer days and sunshine! all the color that Spring brings .... new beginnings and butterflies and birdies and and ... freshness! all new stuff

    ReplyDelete
  96. Keith, it is nice having a snowy winter around for once, not every winter, ha ha! Welcome spring! Looking at your picture of dandelion, they remind me how I fight with them on my lawn.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I do love winter as well but I am always cold so that is a minus. :) I can't wait for the "spring-smell". Everything loves different and that is fantastic. Can't describe the smell but it is so good.

  101. I'm a winter chick at heart, too, Keith! I've made numerous 'anti-summer' posts and comments at risk of being called a moaning faced Minnie - which is every year - by family and friends...!

I do love spring. I'm happy to be pottering about the garden, preparing the flower and home produce beds. I grow some right cracking strawberries!! But all too soon it's summer and sun invades our back garden until it sets! For me that's a major bummer as this past post portrays. And this is one of my nicer ones.....:

  102. I look forward to everything about spring. Mostly not wearing a hat...which I'm wearing today and we're technically into spring...

    ReplyDelete
  103. Being outside without a heavy coat! I love to explore the woods to see what is growing and blooming and I so enjoy the return of the nesting birds and their beautiful songs. Oh, and green leaves on the trees! My plans are to plant as many flowers as I can.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Keith,
I actually love winter too. I don't see much snow here, but it does get very cold during the season and rains a lot. I never used to care for spring because when my dad passed away, spring reminded me of him, but I have come to embrace all the seasons. When I saw the picture of the yellow flowers on here I smiled big because nature means so much to me. You, a baseball fan? It brings me back to a time when a fly ball came at me, bounced on the ground, and smack hit me right in the nose, Ouch! After that, I didn't care for baseball much haha.

  105. When I was a kid, I thought dandelions were the prettiest flowers every. As an adult, I don't like them in my backyard!

    ReplyDelete
  106. So you're a Reds fan? They did pretty good last year.
I'm an autumn person. I like the change of leaves and the smell of the air. Winter is okay if I'm outside skiing or making snowmen. Spring just has too much pollen. The kids and I hibernate during the spring. But I will say, the flowers are very pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  107. birdsong is my favourite thing about spring, and the courtship dances of the ducks....

    ReplyDelete
  108. Beautiful! I adore spring. It's always been my favorite season because of one thing: green. There's something to enlivening and invigorating about the color, and to see it sprouting everywhere, why, it gets my little heart thundering. Of course, then the pollens come and and I become a wheezing mess, but that doesn't stop me from loving the season.

    ReplyDelete
  109. This year, spring has been particularly meaningful for me. There is a tree outside my window on the third floor that I have been virtually scrutinizing for buds. This morning looks auspicious ...

    ReplyDelete
  110. SPRING!!! is my favorite. i am most excited to be outside all weekend every weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hey Keith,

Dude, nice one and of course, there's a bit of a clue you live in the Northern Hemisphere :) Spring, the fresh start, the rebirth of things to come. As for England, summer, which I like, is the warmer part of winter.

Great post! Thanks for sharing! :)

  112. I love spring and the rebirth of nature as it takes hold in its (budding) green finery.
The grey & black and occasional white of winter leaves me cold - and cold is generally all that winter has to offer.
(Sorry I have not commented here for a while Keith - real life and all that...)

  113. Love this...:). I love all the seasons but this Winter was tough. I am looking forward to warm days. No snow (which I am aware that there has been spring snow events) parties, happy occasions.

  115. BLOGHOPPING!

You dropped by my blog a couple of months ago :)

Spring...the colors definitely! And how they accentuate the sunny skies. It's just so.... happy to look at. In the Philippines, there only two season-- the summer and the rainy season.

So I look forward to visiting countries with Spring season so I can enjoy the colors :)

  116. Loved your post, Keith. I'm a winter gal but, bear in mind I'm in a sub-tropical climate so our winters are short and more like a Wyoming fall. Pleasant spring days are welcome but, for me, it's also a warning that our dreadfully hot and humid summer days aren't too far away. Needless to say, I am not a summer gal. Truthfully, I feel like we only have two seasons of which 10 months are hot and 2 months are cool.

  125. I welcome warm days and the blooming of flowers slowly awakening from their winter beds. It will be so nice to open the windows and hear nature's song. It's not that I dislike winter it has just been rather long and the
driving was hard on ice and snow covered roads.
