My All-Time Favorite Song

I am going on vacation tomorrow and I will be gone for a couple of weeks, but I wanted to post today about a song that I have fallen deeply in love with over the past year.

Over the course of my life, there have been hundreds of songs that have deeply moved me and resonated with me. I have never been able to say that one particular song is my favorite though...until now.

"The Scientist" by Coldplay is the most amazing, deep, and poetic song I've ever heard.

I first started listening to Coldplay on a regular basis last spring (I know I know, I was 10 years late to the party) and this song quickly became a song that I simply could not stop listening to. I decided to read more about the song and learned that it was inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1846 short story The Birthmark.

The Birthmark tells the tale of a scientist named Aylmer, who was married to a woman named Georgiana. Aylmer became obsessed with removing what he saw as Georgiana's one physical imperfection - a birthmark on her cheek. He develops a liquid treatment for her to drink that he thinks will dissolve her birthmark. Sadly, the treatment kills her and he is left to live a life of regret; regret for being so scientific in his thinking that he ultimately lost his one true love (the entire second verse of the song speaks of his regret).

Sad, poetic, and poignant. It's simply remarkable.

I encourage you click the play button above and take 5 minutes of your time to listen to this amazing song.

What's your favorite song of all-time?

  2. Nice, but way too sad for repetitive listening for me! Any Beatles song will do just fine.

  3. I can't choose just one! Happy holidays : )

  4. Lovely tune, a beautiful uncontrived voice and a reminder to leave 'well enough'...alone.
I think possibly my favourite all time song would be The Rose but it's a hard choice...there is still Bridge Over Troubled Waters, He Ain't Heavy, Wind Beneath My Wings, A Pittance of Time...and more.

  6. I like it when artists take a story and turn it into song.

  7. One of my favourites! There are so many songs.... but a couple which speak to me in a very personal way are Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' and 'Tubthumpin' by Chumbawumba.

  12. Yes, that's a beautiful song!
I have many favorite songs. I never say no to The Beatles, Celine Dion and The Killers.
This year I obsessed over a couple of Lorde songs and Pompeii by Bastille (I especially like their performance on SNL).

    Have a wonderful vacation! :)

  19. Coldplay do have some very nice songs. I'm afraid I don't have a single all time favourite song, but I do have a whole list of favourites. It's getting added to all the time too.

  20. i will forever be a sucker for coldplay, man.
i think my all-time favorite song (and perhaps its because it's the first song i knew was my favorite and i still adore it to this day just as much as i did so many year ago) is wonderwall by oasis.

  21. I know this song, and others by Coldplay, but I think it would make me feel too sad to listen to it often,... it's very moving. I love music, but don't have a favourite song. Have a good vacation Keith, and stay safe.

  24. I hate to say I have never heard Coldplay, which I will probably correct now. Shame on me--a lovely song.
I have too many favs but always enjoy hearing "Islands in the Stream". I think often it is not just the song but who we relate the song to that makes it special.
    Have a wonderful vacation Keith.

  25. Elizabeth Reed by the Allman Brothers Band when Duane Allman still lived. This is a jazzier tune of theirs. I love the lonely sound. Elizabeth Reed is the name on the tombstone in a cemetery. It has meaning.

  40. It is a lovely and remarkable song - - I admittedly never heard of Coldplay before.

Some of my favorites are "Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel, "When the Smoke is Going Down" by the Scorpions, "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak, "Angie" by the Stones, "Still Loving You" by the Scorpions.....

Aw, heck, my list is getting too long.
    Have a wonderful vacation, Keith!

  51. This song is awesome! I l also have the latest Coldplay video concert that I taped. Way before anyone ever heard of them, my son said they would be famous. But I did not know the story behind the song, wow. Hope you have a wonderful vacation and come back with lots of pictures and stories.

    ReplyDelete
  52. First of all, have a great time off.

That song is in the album "A Rush of Blood to the Head", my favourtie Coldplay album, in fact, the only album I've ever liked by Coldplay. They're like marmite, Coldplay, they are. Either you like them or you don't. I love that song and the video to it. The record has a great opener, too, Politk.

Re favourite songs, I stopped having them about the same time I stopped having favourite everything. However, I still have a favourtie guitar solo, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". :-)

    Greetings from London.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well, my all time favorite songs are either Beatles or from India. However I like this one, I also like their other songs.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh yes, Keith - a beautiful song and I knew which one you were going to say when you mentioned Coldplay. My son loves this song, too and he bought us the CD. I have many songs that I truly love, but I think two come to mind for me - The Beatles - 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps', and Sting, 'Fields of Gold'. There are several Eric Clapton songs that I could die listening to....I love music. Have a great vacation, but don't be gone too long! :) -Karen

  55. Ok so I have always loved this song but now knowing the meaning it is hauntingly beautiful!!
I re-read the lyrics and now I have tears in my eyes at this part:"Tell me you love me, come back and haunt me"
And now it is going to remind me of my regrets in love. So glad you posted this today!!
I always say my all time favorite song is "Friend of the Devil" by the Grateful Dead. Just because it has always reminded me of some really great times in my life. But my all time favorites are actually LOTS of Bob Dylan songs. I think "Bob Dylan's Dream" is one of the best because it reminds me of when I was a teen thinking that the wild, good times would last and how those friends faded away. I also love "You Ain't Goin Nowhere." Oh man, I just love Bob Dylan.

    ReplyDelete
  56. And I'm going to have to listen to this band. I've heard of it but I'm not sure if I've listened to any of their music.

    ReplyDelete
  57. What a beautiful song, Keith. I never heard it before. At the moment my favorite song is "I Want to Marry You" by Bruno Mars. This may change tomorrow. Smiles.

Have a great vacation... Where are you headed this time???? Love the song---the words are terrific...

I have no idea my favorite song of all time since I have so many fav's.....One that I always love is "Shenandoah"....

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  60. l must admit I hadn't heard this song before, it truly is a beautiful song with such a sad story behind it. Haunting.

All time favorite song that I would never get tired of hearing is Awakening by Chris Tomlin.

    Enjoy your vacation!

  61. Their music is definitely haunting and beautiful. Have you heard Somewhere Only We Know by Keane? It reminds me of this song a little...I heard it first on Grey's Anatomy and thought, "What IS that song?" I looked it up and fell in love with it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oextk-If8HQ

    ReplyDelete
  62. Keith,
What a pretty song. It's too bad that the Scientist wanted to make Georgiana perfect in his image. I find imperfections very beautiful.

I would have to say that "What a Wonderful World" is my favorite song, but "Let It Be" by the Beatles comes in a close second. Have fun on your vacation.

    ~Sheri

  63. Oooohhh....a vacation. Good stuff. Enjoy, and have a great time!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Good stuff. I wore out my Coldplay CDs several years ago, but I do still love their sound and lyrics. Chris Martin in concert (I've only seen footage) is such an energetic and amazing musician. You have good musical taste.

    ReplyDelete
  65. One song I love is I HOPE YOU DANCE. I first heard it a few years when my niece got married and that was the song my brother, her father, chose for the father/daughter dance. It has such wise advice for everyone. Lee Ann Womack sings it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. There are many songs that I like and I mostly listen to Hard Rock or Metal. But my favorite song is something that I don't tell many people about. It's Music Box Dancer by Frank Mills. My grandpa bought me a music box when I was little and it played this song and I used to wind my music box up all the time and play this. I still love the song to this day.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Good Morning Optimistic Existentialist, I love Cold Play and I have a few favourites, Magic, Viva La Vida and Strawberry Fields. My music taste is not pinned down to one music genre..... I recently went to see Dolly Parton in concert and she was amazing, but then I have been to a Kate Rusby concert is she was marvellous. I have enjoyed Roberta Flack and Joan Baez in concert and not forgetting Bob Dylan....I have to say, I just love music.
I have so enjoyed my visit that I have become a new reader, I look forward to catching up on some of your other posts.
    Enjoy your holiday.
    Best Wishes
    Daphne

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm always moved by the sound of Coldplay. Emotion in their songs.
Interesting history about that one in particular.
How sad about the scientist. I frankly like moles on faces. Imperfections are beautiful.
Better than an unfortunate accidental death!
Have a terrific vacation! Lemme guess. Yer going to Germany?? :)

  87. My students (taught band, choir and English) introduced my to Cold Play only a couple of years before I retired.. I was a bit late too :) A small group of them did an arrangement of "Fix You" that still brings a rush of warmth when I remember it. Loved your post because I didn't know the background to "The Scientist" so another level of enjoyment added to an already wonderful song. Have a great vacation!

  118. Hello OE. It always catches my eye when someone uses the word existentialist, So glad you are optimistic. Over from another blog and caught your reference to Ky. I am also in Ky. and mosquito plagued. There is some spraying going on and that is even worse. My interest in existentialism goes back to my college days studying Philosophy, Kirkigaard. (?)

  119. Beautiful song, Keith...
And I do love when songs have "real" lyrics. ;) Quite a heartbraking story, as well as a great moral there.
Coldplay is such a terrific band...
Wish I could think of a favorite song...this vast universe of music makes it impossible to pick a favorite...(for me)...
I hope you had a lovely and fun vacation!
    (with Beate, yes?) :)

This one here truly is beautiful and sad and amazing and resonating with me as well. I can't pick a favorite one but there are favorite songs that mark certain times of my life or that I love listening to in certain moods.
Oh wait, there is a favorite one. Our song will always be my favorite one <3
